Hiking
When hiking, always stay on the trail. Bring plenty of water. We normally recommend at least 2- quarts for moderate hikes. It is best to wear light, long pants and shirts to minimize your exposure to both sun and insects. Good hiking boots are important.

Phone & Communications:
The closest public phone is Bahia Esmeralda Lodge inside the white gate. They have a pay phone. Next are phones in Puerto Jimenez. There’s an Internet cafe there as well.
We use marine band VHF radios for most of our communication. We have one in the barn you can use. Here are some neighbors and local business's channels to contact them.

Photography:
film:
Professionals tend to shoot slow ASA films. They might use either Kodachrome 64 or Velvia 50. It's slow film and the light saturates it and you get really rich color. Ektachrome only comes as slow as 100. They're both slide film. You shoot slides and then when you want to print you pick the best ones and you get an 4x5 inner negative made and they print from that.

camera:
the thing is that a good photographer can take a great picture with anything, like a good guitar player can make any guitar sound good. I have one all manual SLR camera and a great little point and shoot with a zoom.

composition:
The only times worth shooting are in the early morning and late afternoon. The light is coming from an angle and the air is just filled with it. In the middle of the day there's too much light and it just washes out everything. Try to shoot at slower speeds to get the light into the film. Hold it steady. Concentrate on people and smaller shots, they're more interesting, take pictures of people you meet.
Keep the sun behind you.

The Green Flash:
On a related topic; when rays of light enter the atmosphere, they're bent, and the amount of bending depends on the wavelengths.
The blue and green end of the spectrum is normally bent more;
the orange and red end is bent less.
The colors are separated as if by a prism.
On a hazeless, flat horizon, when the sea or land is sharply warmer than the air, red and orange wavelengths vanish, leaving green and blue dominant. The Sun's disc briefly flashes green.
